Frequently Asked Questions
What is an unconference and how does it work?
An unconference is a fully attendee-driven event that consciously breaks the structure and hierarchy of traditional conferences where predefined talks are delivered by experts and consumed by participants. The agenda is generated at the beginning of each day and everybody can propose themes for presentation, discussion, exchange of ideas and/or learning from others. In that sense, all participants co-create the event, switching places between teaching and learning throughout the unconference. Furthermore, ideas flow not only within the boundaries of sessions, but are also encouraged through networking, extending previous discussions in the free time purposefully allocated.
At the beginning of each day, we all gather in the “Marketplace” to propose discussion topics. Everybody with an idea for discussion briefly presents it and puts a card on the board. Finally, all topics are voted, and the top-scoring ones are put in the reserved time slots (~1 hour). It is extra helpful if one person from each session sums it up in a 1-page flipchart (called “harvest”), as we plan to gather all harvests and share a glimpse of all discussions regardless of if you attended or not. Note that the whole Marketplace/Sessions procedure will be thoroughly explained on Friday afternoon! Why should I come, what is the target audience?
